Description
Up for Auction is this FR# 2304, .00 Hawaii Overprint / Federal Reserve Note, Series 1934Mule & Error
note.
Errors on any Hawaii Emergency Issues are downright rare, as the total annual production at the BEP was much less than it is today, and their people in Quality Control caught most of these notes before they were allowed to be shipped from the facility.
Hawaii Emergency Issues were only printed in specific press runs for use only in Hawaii and the Pacific Island arenas. They were first issued on June 8, 1942 for use in the Territory of Hawaii, Johnson & Palmyra Islands.
After August 15, 1942, they were the only form of U.S. currency allowed on
the Islands.
By October of 1944, these currency restrictions were ended, and other currency was once again allowed to be used there.
These Emergency Issues were only in general circulation for a very short time in history.
The original intent was to prevent our currency from falling into enemy hands if the Islands were over run.
It is not that hard to understand why finding any kind of error note on one of them is extremely difficult.
Most major currency auctions do not regularly have examples of these Emergency Issue Error notes in their auction catalogs.
This is an example of an Alignment Error.
The actual error occurred during the first printing, when the blank sheet of paper, while transferring from the press feeder, traveled down the feed board to the register table.
The sheet hit the front drop guides for the initial registration, but the side guide failed to fully pull the sheet into register. The sheet was released to the gripper bars to begin the actual Printing process but the sheet was not properly registered sideways.
This in essence caused the sheet to be printed out of register.
Since this was the first printing, the obverse had not yet been sent thru the printing press, so it was not visually evident that the 1
st
pass on the reverse was printed out of register.
The subsequent printings did register properly, causing this alignment to become visual.
This Error Hawaii note is also a Mule!
The reverse of this note is from a Series 1934-
A
printing plate.
While the obverse is from a Series 1934 printing plate.
The mismatch occurred at the BEP, when the workers in the pressroom loaded the wrong printed reverse sheets into the Printing Press.
Any Series 1934 Hawaii with a reverse plate number higher than 318, is a Mule.
The reverse plate number on this note is 393.
This is very dramatic error, which increases its appeal even more.
I grade this note Fine/VF as the note has good paper body, but it also has light staining on the reverse at the bottom left.
Please look at the scans to determine the grade for yourself. The signatures on this note are:
Treasurer of The United States:
W.A. Julian
Secretary of The Treasury:
Henry Morgenthau Jr.
This note would make a fine example for someone collecting Error Notes, as most collections are comprised solely of
Federal Reserve Note Errors or Green Seals.
Legal Tenders, Silver Certificates, National Banknotes, Federal Reserve Bank Notes, Gold Certificates and The Emergency Issues have been out of print for many years now. This note will definitely add some “color” to your Error Note Collection!
