Description
Rare historical Medal commemorating the victories of the Duke of Wellington in India andthe Peninsular War, 1812
. The Designer is Thomas Halliday. The Medal is 47 mm across, and weighs about 39.9 g. I could only find one reference to this Medal in the Web - in Bronze, at
the British Museum, where further information is provided.
The Obverse of the Medal features
Uniformed Bust of the Duke of Wellington, bare head, three-quarter right. The Reverse of the medal depicts Corinthian helmet above shield superimposed on an inscribed standard entwined with the names of the victories. Reverse Inscription
:
ASSYE . VIMIERA . TALAVERA . BUSACO, around, and RODRIGO, BADAJOZ, ALMEIDA, on a ribbon within wreath.
The Curator of the British Museum notes that Assye, India, saw the defeat of the Scindiah and the Rajah of Behar on the 23rd September, 1803. This was Wellesley's first great battle in which he opposed 50,000 enemy with only 4,500 men.
